Big Plans In Store For Pearland

PEARLAND -- The City Council will vote on a massive redevelopment project Monday night.

It's a multi-million dollar idea similar to what was done in The woodlands, and it comes down to location.

It's called the WaterLights District: a 1,000 acre, $700 million project that's bringing a mix of commercial and residential development to Pearland.

Richard Browne, one of the men behind The Woodlands, has put together early plans. He traveled throughout Europe for a time, examining old and new towns, and this is what he came back with.

"The future of Houston, as you know, is going to double and triple in the next 25 to 50 years,"Browne said. "So this area, with all of its openness, and its beautiful access, is certainly destined to be the next major growth area in the Houston region."

Browne said what's working for this project is its proximity to downtown Houston and the Medical Center -both no more than 15 minutes away.

It'll be a place where you can literally live, work and play, and be happy, within a pedestrian environment that's walkable, and with the energy prices going the way they are, that's going to become more and more important,"Browne said.

Because of that, developers hope the METRO light rail line that ends near Reliant, along will expand south to connect the development with Downtown Houston

The city's Planning and Zoning Board approved the plans in recent weeks, seven to zero. Full approval is expected at Monday'scouncil meeting.
